From the very first chord, Deanna Bogart's The Great Unknown is an energetic, vivacious treat, with Bogart's own piano and gut-deep voice the driving forces behind "Sittin' on a Mountain." This energy continues all the way through the disc, from "Love Funk" to "Won't Be Long" to "Life of the Party." "Wrong Side of Love," while mid-tempo, constantly pushes at the beat. A more traditional, behind-the-beat approach is featured on "Lovin' Me," which also highlights Bogart's rich singing. Her attitude (of which there's plenty on this CD) might best be summed up by track 6: "OK," she says, "I'll play the blues." --Genevieve Williams
