This Toronto native blends the bite of a bluesman, the grit of a soul singer, and the contemplation of a folkie into a compelling cohesive whole. Well-respected in Canada, where he's nabbed a few Juno Awards, Linden recorded much of this record in New Orleans, and the vibe of the Deep South pulses through these 14 cuts. Linden is a formidable guitarist, heartfelt vocalist, and thoughtful songwriter, but his real talent lies in the way that he seamlessly fuses all these aspects. The production, courtesy of Linden and John Whynot, is wonderfully dirty and raw, sounding a bit like his buddies in the Band. Rather than self-consciously updating traditional styles, Linden allows his taste for roots music to come out naturally and effortlessly, resulting in an invigorating, completely contemporary sound. Though he's been recording for more than 20 years, Linden is ripe for wider discovery. --Marc Greilsamer
