Percy Mayfield Live [Live]
Editorial Reviews

In these 1981-83 California club performances broadcast over ex-Paul Butterfield pianist Mark Naftalin's blues radio program, Mayfield (who died in 1984) maintains an unconquerable spirit while making the best of a weatherbeaten voice. Given moral and musical support by Naftalin, guitarist Pee Wee Crayton, and a throng of other local players (some of whom move as if in concrete shoes), the versemaker sends shivers down the backbone of admirers with "Please Send Me Someone to Love" but not with the eleven other reinvented originals. Mandatory listening: his pithily titled Poet of the Blues (Specialty CD), with tunes cut in the early 1950s compassing city Blues-style romantic melancholia. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
