Born and raised in Clinton, Mississippi, Gibson first picked up the harmonica at a young age. After high school, Gibson's experiments took him to Clarksdale, where he played with blues guitarist Johnnis Billington and drummer Bobby Little in Billington's group the Midnighters. Eventually, Gibson found his way to Memphis, Tennessee, performing on Beale Street. He developed a close relationship with Pete Pedersen, with whom he studied jazz harmonic technique. On his first two solo releases (1996 & 97),Gibson bridged the gap between blues and jazz and established himself as a versatile producer and musician. He gained national prominence as the blues harmonica virtuoso in the popular Beale Street blues-rock band junkyardmen. His latest solo release,'The Nearness Of You,'is an excursion in sentimentality-and a jazz masterpiece.
