Muddy Waters and Otis Spann ceremoniously took young white Chicago bluesmen Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloom- field under their wing with this combined 1969 studio-concert meeting. The music isn't particularly praiseworthy, with the scions formal and obeisant, the elders steady but seldom inspired, and the excitement of the day-this confirmation of the new generation-long passed. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
