This second CD from singer-guitarist Johnny Rawls is a great listen, full of soul-tinged blues mixed with 1990s songwriting. The songs are evocative; the title track transports the listener to a smoke-filled Southern bar. Ballads like "It's All in the Game" and "You Got Me Going Through Changes" have enough of an edge that their soft style is never ingratiating or boring, and Rawls's rich, smooth voice is steady throughout. His backing band is equally impressive, with a rhythm section that never misses a beat and horns that provide just the right amount of emphasis without becoming overwhelming. --Genevieve Williams
