One of the most powerful and distinctive bluesmen in history, Reverend Gary Davis was a central figure in the folk revival of the 1950s and 1960s, and as such was a key performer during the Newport Folk Festival's heyday. Davis was 69 years old when this album (newly remastered with two bonus cuts) was recorded at the 1965 festival, and his voice had begun to fray a bit. Yet it was still capable of generating enormous force and displaying utter conviction. With its mix of secular and spiritual tunes and many sterling examples of Davis's Piedmont-influenced yet wholly unique two-finger guitar-picking style, Live at Newport is a great introduction to this amazing talent. --Marc Greilsamer
