Not as high profile as Alligator and Blind Pig, Boston-based Tone Cool has quietly been recording challenging contemporary blues for 18 years. Two Grammy nominations for Susan Tedeschi have substantially increased its visibility (and bottom line), but her success came after dozens of quality albums. To celebrate its 50th release, the label has compiled a low-priced, double-disc sampler that should provide exposure for some of its lesser-known artists. The first CD focuses on the label's more popular attractions: Tedeschi, the North Mississippi Allstars' high-octane attack, Bernard Allison's gutsy R&B, and Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers' swinging West Coast boogie. Disc two may be more enlightening, though. It reveals dusty gems from the obscure and diverse likes of Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish, Chicago harpist "Earring" George Mayweather, Terrance Simien's funky zydeco, and the criminally underheard R&B singer Toni Lynn Washington. Her Stax-styled "Good Things Come to Those Who Wait" is one of many of this revelatory collection's should-have-been classics. --Hal Horowitz

"Tone-Cool is a label with a vision. Although its roots were planted in the blues, Tone-Cool has branched out to the worlds of pop, electronica, singer-songwriter rock and jam music as it has grown. Unlike major labels, which are driven by shareholders to sign easily marketable acts that maximize their quarterly profits, Tone-Cool is driven by its heart and ears - and a sense that the roots-based music that is the soul of the company must evolve if it is to find both a new generation of listeners and a healthy future. Think of these two CDs as an entryway to the label's vital present, historic past, and compelling new directions." - Ted Drozdowski (Rolling Stone, Boston Phoenix, etc.)
