This collection offers a sampling of Taj Mahal's strong work on the Private Music label in the '90s. While his individual albums tend to focus on one specific style, this one showcases his diversity. Backed by several hard-hitting bands, he offers commanding and idiomatic performances across an array of genres-searing electric and delicate acoustic blues, New Orleans and Memphis soul, even Nashville country. Although he's mined most of this territory before, and his more far-flung recent ventures are omitted, he still sounds fresh and endearing, his energy and obvious love of the music undiminished.
