Editorial Reviews In his mid-teens, JW discovered local guitarist Tony D; he attended Tonys shows, peppering him with questions as soon as he finished a set. Tonys guitar wizardry contributed to JWs move from drums to guitar. I was just mesmerized by what he was doing JW commented, and added, hes helped me just from watching him and hes helped me from talking, with suggestions of what music to listen to and, of course, tips on playing. JW started playing serious guitar in November 1996, when he got his first electric, a gift from his grandparents. After hearing this young Canadian play, Anson Funderburgh told him, Sounds like youve done a lot of listening to those old records. West-coast bluesman Alex Schultz comments, Definitely got this west-coast sound and, most importantly, feel, going! I hear a lot of Rick [Holmstrom] in (his) sound & phrasing, and the Little Charlie/ Charlie Christian connection - which is a great place to look for inspiration. The JW-Jones Blues Band was formed in 1998 and put together a CD with four each of studio demo songs, live tracks, and home-recorded originals. US blues magazine, Blues Revue, called the disk sonically semi-murky but smoking, with aggressive swingabilly guitar Pierre Chrétien is a stylish pianist who offers perfect jazzy comp work while Jones pulls out smart, classy boogie guitar licks. Pierre Chrétien has been a solid force in the style and direction in the band. From a jazz background, he has brought a whole side to this band that has been a key role in their success. With his help, JW has acquired jazz techniques he never expected to get involved with. Songs like Pierres original Dizzy Spell bring a strong vibe to the retro-jazz this band can put down. The band went through some personnel changes; only two original members, JW and Pierre, remain. New additions include fifteen year old harp player Southside Steve Marriner, upright bassist Nathan Morris, and drummer Steve Hiscox. Young harp player Southside Steve Marriner won the 1999 Blues Harp Blow-Off in Ottawa and joined the band soon after. Jumpin Johnny Sansone, commented to Johnny Russell, Hey Johnny! You didnt tell me I needed an asbestos suit, this kids on fire! South, as JW usually calls him, is one musician JW did not have any trouble getting to know musically. He joined The Johnny Russell Band, with Steve on harp (both still play in this band), and they hit it off right away. On this disk they join forces once again, and they have plenty of room to show their great chemistry. When Rick Holmstrom met JW for the first time, he introduced him to The Mighty Flyers as that guitar player I was telling you about; he then went on to tell them about JWs demo CD Progression after progression my jaw dropped to the ground! Rod Piazza recently commented, Hey man, Rick told me all about you. Arent you the guy that sent him a CD last year? I heard you did one of his songs better than he did! One piece of great advice to get JWs career moving - Holmstrom advised him to start singing as soon as possible. A year later, JW gives it a shot on his debut album - Defibrillatin'.
