Barrelhouse and Blues

Texan Price, silenced just recently, was a superlative pianist whose familiarity with his instrument went as far back as the wild and woolly Kansas City of the late 1920s. This 1969 date in London has him performing solo and in a septet with young traditional jazz luminaries (including the late clarinetist Sandy Brown) who mirror his empathy for the blues. Maintaining a harmonious balance between a pliable single line and an exacting ambidexterity, this once-frequent visitor to Europe never compromises his exceptional musical intelligence during a generous program of original pieces and classics such as Leroy Carr's "How Long Blues" (on which Price also sings). It is gratifying to hear color and excitement subordinated to clarity and resolve in his playing. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
