William "Count" Basie (1904-84) set the gold standard for Kansas City-style swing. Blue Note celebrates his centennial with the reissue of this Roulette recording, which was originally a double LP intended to mark the Basie band's silver anniversary in 1960. The sessions feature updated stereo versions of Basie's classic early hits, and the digital remastering has added more brilliance to Basie's pithy piano work, tight horn arrangements, and bluesy, in-the-pocket grooves. There's the uptempo riff tune, "Jumpin' at the Woodside," the Lester Young showcase, "Lester Leaps In," and the locomotive "9:20 Special." All-star horn players like trumpeters Thad Jones and Joe Newman and saxophonists Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Frank Foster are on the date. But Basie's greatest discovery, his "Number One Son," vocalist Joe Williams, steals the show with his grits-and-gravy rendition of "Sent for You Yesterday." This delightful two-disc set shows why Count Basie is jazz royalty. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
