DeFord Bailey was one of the first stars of the Grand Ole Opry. Instead of featuring hoedowns and sentimental songs, DeFord Bailey gave the Opry a taste of the blues. Instead of coming from a white working class background, he was an African American, the first on the Grand Ole Opry, and one of the finest.

At the heart of this collection are modern, high fidelity recordings of DeFord Bailey doing what he was most famous for, playing the harmonica. But other selections reveal sides of DeFord's music not widely recognized: his abilities as a guitar player, singer and banjo player. He often performed his Kansas City Blues on the Opry, singing it enough that veteran opry members from the 1930s still talked about DeFord and his bulldog. His son recalled that his father becam serious about playing the guitar when he was on tour with the Opry group: he was often assigned to guard the pile of instruments that accompanied them, and while he did that began to try his hand at some of the guitars.
