Mama's Blues [Live]
Editorial Reviews

Block is a white country blues stylist whose singing and guitar playing teem with honest empathy for past masters such as Bessie Smith, Tommy Johnson, and Robert Johnson. As an interpretive singer, however, she conveys little sense of the pained emotionality of her mentors-her inflections are noticeably secondhand-and only when she handles unexceptional originals does her character begin to emerge. This recent outing, recorded for arcane reasons in Chatham, New York's Payne A.M.E. church, joins five earlier Block efforts, 1992's Ain't I a Woman, and a compilation disc-all fair to middling-in the Rounder catalog. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
