Jump In

Jump In is especially notable for its lyrics: Wheeler's originals as well as various borrowed (and embellished) treasures are rife with vivid imagery and poetic vision. Unfortunately, the weakest component on hand is often Wheeler's own harp. When he can summon sufficient wind, he is capable of pleasing warbles in a stripped-down Little Walter mode, and he rides Baldhead Pete's shuffle rhythms with unerring ease. But his tone alternates from the breathy to the wheezy, and too often his improvisations cross the line from basic to unimaginative. James Wheeler sometimes sounds as if he is straining to maintain the requisite level of traditionalist sparseness.... It's good to see a veteran like Wheeler get his place in the sun, but unless you're a diehard harp aficionado, or a Chicago completist, you probably won't find this an essential purchase.
