Charly Blues Masterworks, Vol. 17: Bright Lights, Big City [Import]

Jimmy Reed, an equally impressive singer, guitarist, and harmonica player, endeared himself to a sizable audience in the 1950s and 1960s with lazily polite urban blues tinctured with backwoods dirtiness. While there are a number of retrospectives in the used record bins, Reed is not all that well represented domestically on CD, and this hard-to-find Chameleon set is one of the scant few. Eight of his famous Vee Jay recordings, including "Big Boss Man" and "Baby What You Want Me to Do," are present, along with a few previously lost songs, and we're treated to guitarist Eddie Taylor 5 wise interjections and running commentaries with the leader. Addendum: GNP Crescendo has a three-star collection available, Best of Jimmy Reed, and Mobile Fidelity offers the attractive Jimmy Reed at Carnegie Hall, two studio sessions originally presented as a double-record package in 1961. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
