Goin' to Brownsville

<"b0000066h75540"> Living Blues
Sleepy John Estes's guitar skills were rudimentary, but these 21 sides find his instrumental skills at least undiminished and appropriate for his unadorned "cryin' the blues" vocal style. Included are remakes of several of his early classics ... newer compositions ... show his frequently admired ability to write intimate lyrics drawn from his own life. The CD also provides the opportunity to hear Estes perform a few gospel numbers.... Closing the disc is an extended interview segment conducted by Pete Welding, in which Estes talks about his commercial recording career and the loss of his eyesight.... [This album] has its moments, but in balance it does more to reveal [his] instrumental weaknesses than to showcase his lyrical strengths.
