Despite decades of R&B hits, Little Milton Campbell still doesn't enjoy popularity proportional to his massive talents and enduring accomplishments. But help is on the way via a tribute disc that puts the spotlight on his soulfully Southern-fried blues approach. Recorded on his home turf at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio, this disc is carefully crafted as a crossover effort. Although it depends on guest star power to attract attention, it's the honoree that makes it all worthwhile. Two of the most interesting tracks combine Little Milton's voice with that of tough-minded female vocalists. Lucinda Williams trades verses with him on "Love Hurts," and Susan Tedeschi does likewise on "Mother Earth." The roots workout "Gimme' My Broom," with retro-bluesman Keb' Mo' providing guitar reinforcement, and Dave Alvin's cool and swinging "Never Trust a Woman" are also highlights. More raucous riffs can be found on the collaborations, including an extended rave-up of "I Can't Quit You, Baby," with Gov't Mule while other partnerships, with the likes of Peter Wolf, G. Love, and Delbert McClinton, offer their own rewards. Through it all, Little Milton's classic voice and underrated guitar work shine brightly, hopefully serving as a beacon for fans to discover his earlier efforts. --Michael Point --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
