This CD gives the same satisfaction as a good collection of short stories. There is a warmth and richness to these 21 recordings that place us right next to the artists. Many of these recordings were made in the artists' homes, the comfortable environment affording them an emotional depth that has been caught with amazing clarity and power. Fancy studio tricks would just get in the way of the singers and their acoustic instruments--harmonica, guitar, and handclaps. These varied artists were all recorded within the past few years, and though most seem old enough to predate recording, there is no sense of a dying music; the collection is jubilant. The music favors the ragtimey feel of the Carolinas' blues over Mississippi's gutbucket. Big Boy Henry's tale of his childhood pet rooster, "Old Bill," is hilarious; Etta Baker's bell-like guitar instrumental is enchanting, its spell broken by the sharp-voiced and glad-to-be-gone tone of Neal Pattman's remembrance "Prison Blues." Robert "Wolfman" Belfour's version of "Black Mattie" will be familiar to fans of North Mississippi artists such as R. L. Burnside. --Robert Gordon
