Freak Mountain Ramblers
Editorial Reviews Once again, Jimmy Boyer is my favorite vocalist on this CD, tweaking his vocal style just enough to give each of his songs a separate and distinct identity. This guy should dominate the vocal spotlight. His voice has enough substance and style to carry a much weaker band. The harmonies and clip-clop rythm of "Ridin' Down the Canyon" make it a great ending to a very enjoyable CD. You guys included a wide range of musical styles and influences, and I really think there's something here for just about everybody Band members: Jimmy Boyer - guitar, lead and harmony vocals

While it doesn't sound like Jimmy Buffet, "Spanish Coffee" did make me think of some of his music (light-hearted songs about drinking something?) It would be a great set-starter, if it's not already. I first listened to the CD in my car, and was subjected to the normal distractions, but when the guitar solo in "Real Fine Gal" came on, it was an eye-opener.

: Avast, ye Swabs! Ah, the rich pageantry of Life, eh, lads (bring the band down behind me, boys) - I was just ruminating on "If You Want To Be A Bird" not - I dunno - TWO weeks ago - and now here I am: face to electronic face with two living luminaries from the original band! I tellya synchronicity is a grand thing, ain't it? Ai it not? I know that's right (oom-hoom): that IS what that is (dowwa-dowwa)... But that's not why I summoned you to the thinking machine today, no. It's to tell you that... read more

The Freak Mountain Ramblers keep alive the kind of music that the Holy Modal Rounders, Michael Hurley, Jeffrey Frederick, and The Clamtones have brought to the non-mainstream folk/country/rock listeners around the world. In fact, there are three former Rounders on the CD (bassist David Reisch, drummer Roger North, and guest saxer Teddy Deane), along with two of Portland's best singer/songwriters, Jimmy Boyer and Kevin (Bingo) Richey. The CD carries a soulful live feel too rarely caught in the studio, and while the subject matter and mood of the individual songs ranges from humorous to macabre to pensive, the collection as a whole has a rich dark texture to it that lingers long after the last song has ended.
Kevin (Bingo)Richey - guitar, lead and harmony vocals
David Reisch - bass, lead and harmony vocals
Roger North - drums, congas
Forest Bloodgood - fiddle
Paul Bassett - washboard
