Like Tiny Tim and Leon Redbone, Dandy sounds like he belongs to another era. Yet there's something fresh and refreshing about this 20-year-old's forays into early 1900s American music. He tackles vaudeville, Hawaiian, ragtime, hokum blues and hot jazz with equal parts boyish enthsiasm and scholarly respect. His malleable, contorted voice sounds affected and authentic at the same time. Dandy's sense of humor is the infectious thread that ties these old-time gems together. His only mistep is the gospel standard, "Take My Hand Precious Lord" (featuring guest vocalists rather than Dandy), which sounds too modern amid these antiques. Standouts are "The Gypsy", a 1936 rap-like lovers' quarrel, and "I Ain't Got Nobody", which is as twisted as Tom Waits. Both a history lesson and eccentric entertainment, this disc is - you guessed it - a dandy.

Paul Dandy's debut album, "Wizard Oil" is a dive into vintage blues, ragtime, hot jazz and 1920's vaudeville. Recorded in a live studio setting, the album features Dandy's eccentric blue yodeling vocals, along with a small hot jazz band playing jugs, banjos, steel guitars and bass sax. An eclectic, entertaining album.
