What You See is What You Get

The Blues Imperials' latest album marks a new level of strident indecency in their slash-and-burn approach to performing. The group, expanded two years back by the addition of a crowd-pleasing tenor saxophonist, now takes periodic breaks from the clamor with affective slow blues that steam for Lil' Ed's desperate, measured singing and guitar wringing. There are fourteen enjoyable songs, all from the pen of the head Imperial except J. B. Hutto's "Please Help" and group bassist Pookie Young's "Upset Man." -- © Frank John Hadley 1993
