Teddy Morgan is a young, hotshot blues guitarist from Minneapolis transplanted to Austin. His second album, Louisiana Rain, highlights both his strengths and weaknesses. His most valuable asset is a rare touch on the guitar that allows him to invent fresh, single-note lines even as he stays firmly within his syncopated grooves. His liabilities include a so-so voice and a tendency to write second-rate imitations of familiar blues standards. When he tackles other people's songs, such as Don Covay's "Take This Hurt Off Me," Geno Delafose's "Baby Don't Leave Me," and Jimmy Rogers' "You're the One," the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. Morgan gets valuable help from such guest musicians as Kim Wilson, Gene Taylor and Gurf Morlix. --Geoffrey Himes --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
