Moods of St. Mildred
Editorial Reviews One of the achievements of the CD is the wide variety of musical styles that are seamlessly integrated into the blues genre. Styles such as old-time Appalachian-flavored bluegrass, gospel, jazz, rhythm-and-blues, rock-and-roll, folk, and even the Cajun waltz are clearly represented in the 10 selections. Yet the predominant blues feel and overall unity of sound never varies from beginning to end. Another strength of the CD is the exceptional quality of the lyrics, which have been described as "two cuts above." The writing features clever turns of phrase ("How can boxcars goes so slow when forever went so fast?"), striking metaphors ("You've been a beauty since the days you were born, but loving you is like a crown of thorns."), and tongue-cheek humor (" She's absolutely perfect...more or less.") Listeners have also responded favorably to the vocal variety of the CD and the close, sometimes inventive harmony of the tracks. All three members of Billyblues take turns at the lead vocals and sing in three-part harmony with a tight blend developed by years of performing together. All in all, Billyblues' "Moods of St. Mildred" builds on the foundation of their successful first CD, "Where the River Meets the Mountains," and has proved to be appealing to traditional blues lovers as well as fans of contemporary acoustic music with more wide-ranging tastes.
