The title track on When a Guitar Plays the Blues sets the tone for the album. That tone is one of quiet intensity; while most of the songs are fairly slow, they have an energy that keeps things moving. This is especially noticeable on some of the mid-tempo selections, such as "Red Hot" and "Real Thang." However, it's the slower stuff that really smokes: "Want to Be Touched by You" has a palpable yearning and there's a barely restrained intensity about "Who Do Me" that's immensely appealing. --Genevieve Williams

The album has a distinctly Southern feel, with country and western touches....
