Marcus Robert's perhaps the greatest pianist of our time lives in Tallahassee. He use to check out other players at Main Street music. When we were in college at Florida A&M University we use to go over to this place. I started hanging out with Marcus, playing but I needed to learn specific things on my instrument first. I knew where he was coming from and I knew I had a lot of practicing ahead of me. Marcus Printup (trumpet), Ricky Ravelo (bass) and I got to know each other during these sessions. Ravelo and Printup encouraged me to transfer to the University of North Florida to study there and play with them. I moved to Jacksonville in 1993. Printup, Ricky and I played a few festivals together. Occasionally, Printup used Milan Mincek (sax) and that was the first time I had met and played with him. Milan and I started hanging out. It was then we decided to form our own group, SwingSet. I met Roy Dunlap (piano) at UNF, who later joined the group. I knew Greg Williams! (bass) from FAMU. Herb Harris (sax), Greg and I used to play together in Tallahassee before Herb moved to New York. When Ricky couldn't commit to us, we asked Greg to join SwingSet. We later added Vince Gardner (trombone). I knew him from FAMU also. vince would come to sit in when we performed in Tallahassee. Vince agreed to join us and moved to Jacksonville to finish school at UNF. What really sparked the group was when Wynton Marsalis came to town. We asked if he could come over and sit in on a gig. He did and we played together all night long. That night inspired us to keep playing together.
