The Tom Andes Quintet is a group of veteran musicians that has been performing together for 10 years. Tom Andes, the band leader and composer has been performing professionally for 20 years. He has a degree from the University of Missouri at Columbia and a degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in piano performance. Outer Limits is a collection of eight tunes arranged for piano trio and two horns; saxes and trumpet. The concept was to use extended forms and complex harmonies to create a new original sound. The album has multiple dimensions using swing, latin, tango and even classical "feels" as vehicles for the improvisations. The ensemble playing and tune selection are reminiscent of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. Outer Limits was recorded live at the Lodge of Four Seasons which gives the music an exciting, spontaneous energy which propels the music forward. When the band is playing together the sound is bigger than than the sum of its parts. This symbiosis makes for an exciting listen and a compelling jazz experience.
