These recordings were made in the Mississippi and Louisiana State Penitentiaries. The singers and musicians were all African American prisoners. It is hard to find more heartfelt blues performances than this albums work recorded by anonymous prisoners, whether on guitar and vocals or the work gang songs captured herein.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like on a chain gang then hopefully you will never get any closer than this album. You can literally hear the prisoners breaking the rocks as they sing these haunting spirituals and work songs. A must have for any serious student of the blues.
