This compilation showcases the resurgence of Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, which happened to coincide with his Tradition years. Beginning with his country blues on solo acoustic guitar, the range of this release also highlights Lightnin's work with other great bluesmen of the time: Big Joe Williams, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee. The later recordings on this collection include Hopkins playing in a band setting of drums, bass, and trombone. These recordings, made in the '60s, were an attempt at a more commercial sound, yet the folky pure blues of Lightnin' shines through.
