Joy
Editorial Reviews A Philadelphia native, Libby Winchester McDowell began performing acoustic blues/folk music in North Carolina, both as a solo performer and in the duo Woltz and Winchester. She was the featured singer with Greensboro area jazz bands Mimosa and Salt and Pepper in the late 70s. In the early 80s, Libby moved back to the Philadelphia area from where she toured as a solo folk/jazz/blues performer at clubs and college venues up and down the East Coast. Libby moved to Delaware in 1985, where she continued to develop a jazz repetoire. In 1994, she and husband saxophonist Mike McDowell formed the acoustic jazz band Tate Street, performing jazz standards and ballads. Increasingly drawn to Brazilian rhythms, Libby and Mike reformed the band as The Libby McDowell Jazz Band, featuring a fluid mix of bossa nova, ballads, jazz standards, and blues. Libby's CD, JOY, reflects the mix of jazz, blues and Brazilian influences that has been the bands hallmark for the last six years. The CD features familiar jazz standards by Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and Clifford Brown as well as Carlos Antonio Jobim and Milton Nascimento, with original music and songs that aren't standards, but should be, like Percy Mayfield's "Lost Mind" and Lil Green's "Now What Do You Think?"
