Postcards from California
Editorial Reviews Along with the originals, he recorded a few covers to compliment the overall sound of the CD, including Ornette Colemans "Tomorrow is the Question!", Stevie Wonders "Tell Me Something Good", and a couple of classic Brazilian instrumentals. In the traditional "Wade in the Water", he plays the lead with a glass slide to add to the eerie nature of the song, and on "Red River Valley", science fiction film scores dictated the direction of the bombastic solos. Cory approached the instruments he played in non-traditional ways in an effort to give sonic variety. In many of the tracks, he uses the two handed tapping style, while in others he gets an aggressive, distorted guitar sound. Fans of 70s funk may even hear a tribute to bass legend Bootsie Collins. "Postcards from California" is a personal statement about life and loss, and through its sparse textures and open musical spaces, one might be able to see old California. Imagine the music to go along with an old western, full of sun burned hills, and dusty ghost towns. Then imagine David Lynch as the director. Close your eyes and take a listen.

"Postcards from California" is the new CD from electric bassist & composer Cory Combs. Cory set out to perform and record music that would show off the lyrical and melodic side of the electric bass. His idea was to write simple, short pieces, stripped bare of any extras, but full of personal meaning. He drew on a wide range of influences, from traditional blues singers like Mississippi John Hurt to modern jazz great Bill Frisell. Minimalist and avant-garde influences also creep in, with an unmistakable twist of nostalgia and humor thrown in for good measure.
Half of all sales will go to the Chris Combs Foundation, which was set up last year to help independent artists, musicians and filmmakers fund their projects.
Postcards from California, Music, Cory Combs, An eclectic romp into the realm of the solo fretless bass, ranging from funky to minimalist with a twist of humor and nostalgia thrown in.
