Bluemando
Editorial Reviews REVIEWS "It's called "Bluemando", but Marc Woodward's new cd blends blues, jazz and country, as well as throwing in evergreens "Girl from Ipanema" and "Autumn Leaves".Marc kicks off with a lively acoustic blues "Going to Brownsville", accompanied by some cool double-bass playing. This track gives us an introduction to Marc's fluid mando-blues licks. How does he get all those notes in?A slow, melodic self-penned blues, "Apple in the Barrel", follows. This is a nicely structured song. Marc's feel is very laid-back. Marc's tremolo techniques are to the fore on a number of tracks - his instrumental "Pinewood Waltz" is a prime example. As I listened to the album I was reminded of Eric Clapton at about the time he released his solo work, such as "Ocean Boulevard". Something about the vocals, the phrasing of the licks and the melodic and harmonic song structures. I'm not saying Marc's a copyist - he certainly is not - but he does have that confident relaxed feel of a musician at the top of his class. "The Way You Do" introduced me to electric slide mandolin - wow! The slide on this track is reminiscent of Derek and the Dominoes "Layla" - a lovely sound. As a mandolin player you might be listening to every note thinking "how does he do that?" Don't. Pour yourself a whisky, put your feet up and just absorb Marc's relaxing rhythms. Recommended."
