Music has always been a part of Renee's life. From the time she was 5 years old, Renee has fond memories of singing in church. With her parents always at her side, Renee became a local favorite in Meridian, Mississippi. She pursued her love of music traveling across country, but it was when she went to college that Big Band music became the genre of choice. Dan Michael Colbert, a talented musician on campus, asked Renee if she had ever heard of "Swing"; an enduring musical relationship that has spanned over a decade thus began.

Renee used to listen to Liza Minelli for hours on end as a young child, mimicking every nuance in her musical style. She was fascinated with the stage presence of Bette Middler, and found Bette's ability to captivate the audience with hilarious comedy one minute and a spellbinding ballad the next remarkable. Once she hit the college scene, Big Band vocalist the likes of Anita O'Day, Helen Forrest, Jo Stafford and Doris Day were emulated. Renee was particularly attracted to the unique phrasing and vocal styling of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald.

Renee began singing with the Capitol City Stage Band in 1985 as a volunteer, an inexperienced vocalist who wanted some professional experience singing with the "big boys". Soon bookings were coming out of the woodwork, and they all wanted to hear that girl with the unique sound...Nobody could figure out how to label it...is it blues, jazz,strictly big band? Whatever it was, they wanted to hear it again and again.
