R & B Dynamite
Editorial Reviews
<"b0000009fu5228"> From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
British collection of middling R&B tracks that singer Etta James made for Modern during her flirtatious teenage years in the 1950s. In the New Orleans and Los Angeles studios she turns a phrase with a precocious sense of self-possession, but her emotional believability is that of a callow artist. While James's 1955 hit "Good Rockin' Daddy" and "Roll with Me Henry," written with her mentor Johnny Otis, are good fun, a great many songs have been outfitted with emetic melodies, puerile lyrics, and showy but worthless arrangements. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
