Home Is
Editorial Reviews Jds live show varies for the venue. He can come from a packed bar one night playing with his full band, including piano, organ and blues harp genius Phil Cook, and go to the next night to a carpeted theater and rip his heart out singing his solo songs to an intensively involved audience. When Mount Vernon was touring and selling over 4000 copies of their two albums they would fill rooms at universitys and festival fields to the brink and keep their audience staying till the very end with the ground shaking funk, horns blastin, textured folk amd Jds unmistakable vocals. Now Jd, plans on doing the same with his solo group (consisting of the same rhythm section from Mount Vernon) while filling out dates at more intimate settings as well. His solo debut release, Home Is is due for release Nov. 5th, 2001. It is a twelve-song journey of his living beneath the huge country sky in western Wisconsin.

His home in the hills around Eau Claire, Wisconsin have been the musical landscape for the scores of songs written by Jd Vernon since he first picked up pen and guitar. Since then he has released two albums with the band Mount Vernon, an 8 piece folk, blues and roots band, and is awaiting the much anticipated solo debut CD entitled Home Is. When people try to label Jds music they usually have tough time. They come closest when they compare his writing to Jackson Browne and Tom Waits, and his guitar playing to Bonnie Raitt, and Keb Mo. He also plays piano ala the school of Bruce Hornsby and in the musical style of Bill Frisell. The songs come from what has been described as an Old Soul, deeply rooted in the music of the past, the present and a relentless regard for the sacredness of everyday life.

Home Is, a solo debut by Jd Vernon, is a 12 song musical journey through the heart and mind of this young but deeply experienced singer songwriter. On this album, he explores such musical inspirations as Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt and Keb Mo while capturing a whole new perspective within the folk genre. His strong roots in the blues and his deep historical jazz knowledge meet up with a style derived from more modern writers such as Ani Difranco and the Indigo Girls. Jd has a relentless regard for the goodness and sacredness of everyday, normal life. The simple life, peoples homes, where they grew up, what constitutes a good memory and the good pain that sometimes comes with the pure joys in life are all things that are very important in his writing. It shows in the very first song on Home Is, Feels like Home, which contains layering acoustic and ambient guitars, and embraces the listener imposing images like those of autumn in Wisconsin while Ver! non paints with his warm, home-hitting words. Home Is is a song based, flowing album that will warm the old heart and adhere to the new.
