<"b00000eug35228"> From Grove Press Guide to Blues on CD
In 1954, Elvis Presley reconstructed Crudup's "That's All Right Mama" and scored his first Memphis hit thanks to local disc jockey Dewey Phillips. The original and twenty-one other songs recorded by the Delta-born singer/guitarist for RCA's Lester Melrose between 1941 and 1953 are competently performed but unremarkable. Crudup's preening voice lacks heft and evocative power, and his small groups don't have a leavening sense of swing. -- © Frank John Hadley 1993 --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
