Some artists painstakingly study their craft and work for success; others take their gift and find their fate. Chilean-born singer Claudia Acuna is definitely of the latter order, a powerful vocalist and stylist who already cuts a daring figure on the New York jazz scene. Not in possession of a stereotypically pretty voice, Acuna's strengths lie in her sonorous delivery, rich harmonies, and theatrical arrangements. As on her debut, Wind of the South, Acuna matches native folk songs with Latinized jazz standards, striking the perfect balance of familiarity and adventure.
