The Story of Chansons
Editorial Reviews

With thousands of songs to choose from, it must have been a daunting task choosing 20 to sum up the history of the French chanson, but the final choice shows considerable acumen. Although Piaf, Trenet, Becaud, Chevalier and Montero (whose recent death drew little attention) each have a track, many other big names, including Brassens, Ferri, Brel and Aznavour, don't. The compiler chose artists from the genre's golden era who became famous beyond France as well as lesser-knowns who were nonetheless innovative. Le Grand Prix du Disque was created especially to honor Lucienne Boyer's 1930 recording of "Parlez-Moi D'Amour"; Jean Sablon was the first to sing through a microphone, and Henri Salvador was the first to make use of Scopitone, the original video jukebox. --Paul-Emile Comeau
