Mon Legionnaire is an impressive snapshot of a youthful Edith Piaf, in her early 20s and already capturing French hearts on the eve of Hitler's rise to power and World War II. These recordings from 1937 to 1940 reveal Piaf to be a developed vocalist and charismatic figure whose tragic personal history and emotional singing served as a perfect expression for the French during an era when war was in the air. Many popular and patriotic songs are pulled together here, most notably the merry "Je N'en Connais Pas la Fin" and the sauntering "Mon Legionnaire." The problem with this CD is its poor sound quality; there's plenty of hiss and occasional crackling that at once both detracts from Piaf's formidable vocal style and adds to the charm of the music. Still, the strength and emotion of Piaf's voice flies at full power here, and those interested in exploring the greatest singer in France during this delicate era will find plenty to discover. --Karen Karleski --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.
