Beginning with the title ballad that became his signature anthem, and concluding with "The Best is Yet to Come," this hit album captures Tony Bennett at the peak of his "pop"-ularity, in lush orchestral arrangements. This is Bennett the belter at his best, his big voice made to sound even more expansive with that hallmark early-'60s echo behind it. But the jazz vocalist in Bennett still knows how to find intimacy and delicacy even in broad settings like these--particularly in his tribute to the city by the bay. "Once Upon a Time" is an especially lovely ballad from a forgotten Broadway show, and for variety there's also a big-band Latin treatment of Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and a few brassy up-tempo numbers ("Rules of the Road," "Taking a Chance on Love") that could gain Bennett an honorary membership in the Rat Pack.
