Now we're cooking with gas. Most of the sonatas in Volume 1 show a Haydn who was not yet fully formed, but the 17 sonatas in this set are all prime goods. For one thing, the set uses the old, inaccurate Hoboken numbers, so "Sonata No. 25" is actually No. 40! But while you may have favorites among these pieces, there isn't a bad one in the bunch: more than three hours of superb music, much of which is unknown to most music lovers. Walter Olbertz's performances continue to satisfy, standing up to competition from the better- known pianists (alas, not too many!) who have recorded some of them. The 1976-78 East German recordings sound fine. --Leslie Gerber
