Editorial Reviews
From the Label
As an explicit commitment of the outreach philosophy of Saratoga Springs United Methodist Church, this unique and acclaimed Frobenius pipe organ is made available to the community as a concert and recital resource. Our own Frobenius Concert Series features local recitalists, chamber music ensembles and choruses of high artistic achievement, as well as national and international concert artists. This versatile instrument has been chosen for the interpretation of music spanning more than 500 years, including many contemporary works and US and world premieres.

About the Artist

A graduate of the State University of New York at Albany with a degree in electronic music composition, he is a Registered Piano Technician... read more

Album Description
"Health; History; Horses" proclaim the Saratoga Springs tourist guides. This upstate New York town - American Heritage Magazines' 1997 Great American Place award winner - indeed has much to offer visitors and residents alike. But when the busy summer tourist season winds down, when the final thoroughbred horse race is won, and when the Performing Arts Center no longer resonates to the sounds and spectacle of the New York City Ballet, Philadelphia Orchestra, and Blues, Jazz and Rock bands, a new arts culture awakens. A multitude of exceptional "off season" chamber, choral, and instrumental concerts emerges, supported by enthusiastic lovers of the performing arts from the Saratoga-Capital District and far beyond.

One of the more recent among these is the "Frobenius Concert Series", established in 1996 coincident with the dedication of the United Methodist Church's new Frobenius pipe organ. In its first three seasons the Series drew widespread praise and standing-room only audiences. A large part of the attraction is the church's decision proactively to bring the organ into the community: The instrument has been featured in combination with many of the area's finest performing arts organizations, as well as with student musicians in school and other youth music groups. Further, the Series has attracted artists of local, national and international acclaim. This recording was created and produced by the music staff as an affirmation and celebration of the church's music outreach philosophy, and to help support the Frobenius Concert Series.

The CD features Opus 995 - an "Art" pipe organ hand crafted by Thedor Frobenius & Sons of Denmark. In the vanguard of the "Organ Reform Movement" in the 1930's, Frobenius is today acknowledged as one of the world's leading builders of Art instruments. The firm's uncompromising emphasis on tonal quality is legendary. For example, Frobenius remains one of the few organ builders to have retained the tradition of voicing entirely on site. This ensures a perfect balance with the acoustics of the building, with respect to both volume and tonal quality. This two-manual and pedal, mechanical action instrument has 27 speaking stops and 30 ranks. The music performed spans the period from the Baroque to the present, and is chosen to demonstrate the instrument's tremendous variety of tone color.

Also featured is one of Gustav Mahler's finest song cycles, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer), sung here with Mahler's original piano accompaniment. Mahler wrote both the words and music when he was 24 years old. The songs chronicle, through the eyes of a heartbroken wanderer, Mahler's unhappy love affair with an actress.
