Schubert's early symphonies are charming works that really deserve more than an occasional performance. The Fourth, subtitled "Tragic," really isn't all that severe for all its minor key gestures, while the Third is simply delightful--very clearly a young man's music. Herbert Blomstedt's performances give the music the stature it deserves without over-inflation, and the orchestra is beyond praise. --David Hurwitz
