Although the title Baroque Music for Mandolin and Lute is a slight misnomer--none of the pieces were actually composed for a mandolin and lute duo--Duetta Giocondo do such a fine job of playing these pieces, you'd think they were written with the two instruments in mind. Mandolinist Caterina Lichtenberg and lutenist Mirko Schrader have taken two keyboard works, Handel's Suite in G Major and Bach's French Suite III in B Minor, and have skillfully arranged them for their instruments. The plucked strings of the lute and mandolin have similar timbres to those of the harpsichord, so the arrangements sound natural and unforced. And the tonal contrast between the metal strings of the mandolin and the gut strings of the lute produce subtle dynamic differences that are impossible to play on the harpsichord. Marais, Scarlatti, and Dario Castello, the composers of the three other selections, did not specify instruments for their sonatas, just the range and pitch required to play them. As on the keyboard arrangements, Duetta Giocondo do a masterful job of bringing the music to life. The sound of the mandolin and lute is perhaps on the light side, but then, as with making a soufflé, sometimes only a delicate touch will do. --Michael Simmons
