From the banging drums in the opening movement and all the way through, this disc is just a delight. These two Rameau suites are filled with invention and sparkling orchestration. Brüggen and his period-instrument band play with charm and sensitivity, and when they get a chance they cut loose with very lively rhythms. Even listeners who ordinarily wouldn't consider early Baroque ballet music may well find this disc worthwhile, and the lengthy program notes sketch in plenty of background information for novices. Very highly recommended on all counts, including the colorful recorded sound, which comes from live performances and preserves their energy and atmosphere. --Leslie Gerber
