Unlike most Berlin Classics CDs, which are recycled from East German LP recordings, this is a recent digital recording. In this case, it's a pity. Those East German tapes usually sound quite good, while this recording is so dry and close up it makes the instruments unpleasant to hear. It's hard to tell whether some of the unpleasant tonal qualities are the fault of the players or the recording, but since the recording is otherwise faulty it's more likely the problem with the tone, also. Too bad, since these are intelligent, well-played performances of some very attractive repertoire, two mainstays of French chamber music and an attractive novelty by a French resident. --Leslie Gerber
