From our obsessively materialistic latter 20th century, in which songs proclaim the glory of physical pleasure and our leaders sell promises of long-term financial security, it seems a far and lonely journey to a world in which a major composer writes entire cantatas about death, confronting head-on the desperateness of the human condition. "Dearest God, when will I die?" asks the opening chorus of Cantata BWV 8. "My bitter cup is filled with tears," worries a soloist in BWV 138. Depressing? Not at all, because of course, there's much more to the message than this. We all feel and wonder about these things, and Bach's texts invariably lead us to a place of comfort and reassurance, reminding us of the heavenly promise of eternal peace and joy. That his music so brilliantly and perfectly embodies all of these profound sentiments is the essence of Bach's genius, evident everywhere in these three superb but rarely heard cantatas. Highlights include the tenor-bass duet in Cantata 125 and the wonderful chorus movements in all three works. --David Vernier
