Album Description
The sonatas on this recording exemplify and reflect the gamut not only of Telemann's genius, but his compositional style. He employs a range of textures from homophonic to imitative. The rhythms can be complicated, which adds to the expressivity of the musical line. His concept of phrase structure varies from a lyrical Italianate approach to contrapuntal. From the point of view of form, Telemann employs the traditional sonata da chiesa pattern of slow-fast-slow-fast, but what Telemann sometimes labels a sonata can be considered a suite in which he utilizes baroque dance, such as the allemande, minuet and gigue. Thus Telemann successfuly combines the elements of the Italian and French baroque with residual traces of the German contrapuntal style.
