Sym 3/5/6/7

This is a fascinating set. The nearly forgotten Carl Schuricht, becoming something of a cult favorite, turns out three truly splendid performances here. The Eroica is surprisingly bland, but the Fifth Symphony really moves along; the Pastorale is sunny and lovely, and the Seventh Symphony dances in a most exciting way. The transfers, from 1937-46 78s, are almost entirely splendid, and most of the time it's hard to tell the sound even comes from 78s. But the first movement of the Seventh Symphony is disfigured by pitch waver (caused by an off-center 78) that makes it unlistenable. What a pity! Both discs are mislabeled but contain the music they are supposed to. --Leslie Gerber
