Virtually unknown in North America, the German composer Helmut Lachenmann's position is rivaled only by few other living European composers. Younger than Pierre Boulez but older than Steve Reich, Lachenmann perhaps more than any other composer in the last half of the 20th century has forged the most comprehensive and personal musical language. At first listening, Lachenmann's music may seem gratuitously harsh and devoid of the sounds we are accustomed to hearing from acoustic instruments; but on further listening, one begins to appreciate the originality of his music. Although this disc may not be the best introduction to Lachenmann's music, the exquisite performances of these early works give the listener a very good sampling of a truly visionary composer. --Kirk Noreen
